I am finally paying some much deserved attention to this blog. So promos are over. But I find my life still as hectic as before, in a good way I guess. For the uninitiated, I have actually joined NJC hockey as a goalkeeper. Though the goalkeeper pads stink beyond words can describe (a few generations of goalkeepers' sweat and god-knows-what) and the horrible runs force my cranky and rusty old bones to move, I think being in a team is really cool. Now I know what's all the big fuss about being a 'hocker'. Somehow, the trainings remind me of my Sec 1 and 2 NCC days where the team spirit was really strong because we had to take a lot of shit.Being a goalkeeper is really fun. You feel invulnerable (well almost) and there is so much to learn. The ball moves so fast that you cannot really see it thus you have to anticipate and position yourself well. So it kinda strokes your ego when you can stop such a fast object and keep the goal safe. We have an upcoming SRC 4-a-side tournament this coming Saturday. The playing surface is field and I have been drafted. It is quite difficult for me because not only am I not accustomed to using a player hockey stick, (yes, there is a difference between a player's and a goalkeeper's stick) the playing surface is alien to me. We tried out playing on field for training today. The ball, as expected, refuses to cruise on the undulating ground, grass, mud and all. As a result, we have to resort to brute strength to attack and defend and we all know that a stick has no eyes- there were quite a lot of injuries this week. I received a couple of rough knocks on my ankles and some on my knee and shin. Well, at least, I have come to appreciate my goalkeeper pads.
